About Me

Thanks for visiting my website.  I am currently employed by Genomma Lab, the top pharmaceutical company in Mexico, as the Director of Web Marketing and Operations.  While I reside in New York, I travel frequently to Mexico City and other destinations worldwide in pursuit of creativity, new technology, and of course good food and culture.  Previously I was employed as Microsoft's Web Initiative Lead in the US, and before that managed their creative agency business.  I find Genomma to be a nice contrast to the structure and predictability of large corporate America.  I hope that you take a moment to read the probably outdated content on my website (time to blog = a luxury I don't have).  Bienvenidos!

Early perspective on my new place of employment
It has been a very interesting experience working for Genomma Lab for the past couple of months, certainly a lot different from my time at Microsoft.  It is a company 1% the size of Microsoft, and one where I not only interact with the CEO/COO, but I report to them and brainstorm with them, which did not ever seem to be a possibility at Microsoft.  My new role at this Mexico City based company, Director of Digital Marketing and Operations,  presents a number of new challenges and opportunities, not least of which is the language barrier.  In the next 6 months I have been tasked with turning around the company's image on the web (couldn't be much worse), launching sites for over 100 new products, and driving strategic planning and execution for integrated marketing campaigns in coordination with the VP of Marketing (who focuses 95%+ on television).  At this point, the greatest challenges are 1) learning spanish 2) remotely managing a team of 15 (which will grow to 24) from New York 3) managing my internal stakeholders at Genomma Lab 4) establishing business processes to drive consistent behavior and 5) launching a ton of sites and managing our brand image.  Some of the early technical tasks have included platform evaluation - both .NET and PHP-based CMS, with some excellent solutions by Drupal and other excellent solutions by Telerik (Sitefinity), working with my team to create a new brand image for Genomma Lab by completely redesigining the homepage, and hiring a team to handle the myriad of challenges that we face moving forward.  In the case of Genomma Lab, I decided to hire the team rather than outsource the work due to cost of labor, current in-house talent and expertise, and the "Genomma Way" which is very much geared toward building capability internally and scaling over time.  So far, everything looks good, and we have attracted and hired some top talent for the jobs.  I look forward to updating this blog with some of the launches and successes we have down the road.  I look forward to exploring Mexico, learning Spanish, and building a new marketing capability for the top pharmaceutical and cosmetic company in Mexico.  Watch out P&G, Novartis, Johnson & Johnson etc.... Aqui viene Genomma Lab!

World Cup
So far it has been an exciting World Cup.  In my bracket, I had Spain and Brazil in the final, which still looks possible.  Amazingly France and defending champions Italy did not make it past the Group Stage.  The USA team doesn't look great, but I think they may get lucky and get to the quarter finals.  Everyone can dream, right?

Tech Event Week NYC

I'm at WordCamp NYC, Wordpress's 750+ person event for developers, bloggers, and enthusiasts of the platform. It does not surprise me that this is the most popular application on the Internet today. It is just 'EASY'. Most of the people I talk to here don't code and don't know HTML. You don't need to be technical to get a lot out of this platform. Microsoft activity here is minimal, and I hope to fix that over the next few months.

Starting tomorrow is Future of Web Design http://events.carsonified.com/fowd/2009/nyc and Web 2.0 Expo http://www.web2expo.com/webexny2009/ where I'm speaking at 3 different times about the Microsoft Web Platform. If you're at the event, make sure to stop by the Microsoft booth for some free tshirts etc. and an inspiring talk on Microsoft's Web Platform.

I'm expecting some serious event fatigue by Thursday. Looking forward to seeing you there.
